GOODS AND SERVICE TAX(GST) stands for Goods and Services Tax, a comprehensive indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services. GST has replaced multiple indirect taxes such as VAT, excise duty, service tax, and others.

GST has three components – CGST, SGST, and IGST. CGST is levied by the Central Government, SGST is levied by the State Government, and IGST is levied on inter-state supplies.

Who needs to register for GST?

GOODS AND SERVICE TAX(GST) Businesses with an annual turnover of more than Rs. 40 lakhs (Rs. 10 lakhs for northeastern states) are required to register for GST. Businesses with a turnover of less than Rs. 40 lakhs (Rs. 10 lakhs for northeastern states) can register for GST voluntarily.

GST Registration Procedure

The procedure for GST registration is simple and can be done online through the GST portal. The following are the steps to register for GST:

Step 1

Visit the GST portal at https://www.gst.gov.in/ and click on the ‘Register Now’ button.

Step 2

Select the ‘New Registration’ option and enter your details such as name, PAN, email, and mobile number. You will receive an OTP on your mobile number and email for verification.

Step 3

Once the OTP is verified, you will receive a Temporary Reference Number (TRN) on your mobile number and email.

Step 4

Log in to the GST portal using the TRN and continue the registration process by entering your business details, bank account details, and uploading relevant documents such as PAN card, Aadhaar card, and address proof.

Step 5

After submitting the application, an Application Reference Number (ARN) will be generated, which can be used to track the status of the application.

Step 6

The application will be reviewed by the GST officer, and if everything is in order, the GST registration certificate will be issued.

  1. PAN card of the business and its promoters
  2.  Aadhaar card of the business and its promoters
  3. Proof of business registration, such as a partnership deed, certificate of incorporation, or trust deed
  4. Address proof of the business, such as a rent agreement, electricity bill, or property tax receipt
  5. Bank account statement or cancelled cheque
  6. Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) of the authorized signatory, if applicable
  7. Photograph of the authorized signatory, if applicable
  8. Letter of authorization or board resolution authorizing the authorized signatory, if applicable
